A person does not seek learning if they believe they do not need it, and does not seek self-improvement if they believe they are already performing the task correctly.
The most difficult kind of ignorance is the ignorance in which its owner does not realize that they are ignorant.
When a person begins dealing with a new field, their brain does not yet possess the mental models, experience, or standards needed to accurately evaluate their performance. Therefore, they rely on intuition, guesswork, or limited experience, which makes them believe that the task is simpler than it actually is.
Because of this lack of experience, the person cannot see the mistakes they are making, because recognizing the mistake itself requires knowledge they have not yet acquired. As a result, they may feel highly confident even though their performance is still weak.

Although this stage may feel frustrating to many people, it is actually one of the most important stages in the learning process because it represents the beginning of genuine awareness. Acknowledging that you do not know is not a sign of weakness; it is the first step toward acquiring knowledge.

After a person begins understanding their mistakes and practices the skill regularly, they gradually move to the third stage, Conscious Competence, where they become capable of performing the skill correctly, but still need concentration and conscious thought while performing it.
The Conscious Competence stage represents the point at which a person begins to reap the benefits of learning. They become capable of performing the skill correctly, but still need concentration and conscious thought in every step they take. They know what needs to be done and how to do it, but they have not yet reached the stage of automatic performance.
At this stage, the difference between a beginner and a learner becomes clear. The learner no longer makes the same basic mistakes and has developed a good understanding of the concepts and procedures, and can apply them successfully. However, performing the skill still consumes a significant portion of their attention and mental resources.
Success at this stage does not depend on talent, but on attention, concentration, and commitment to the correct method.
With repeated practice, the brain begins building stronger neural pathways, and the steps become more organized, but performing them still requires conscious supervision. Therefore, a person can perform the task successfully when focused, but may make mistakes when exposed to distractions, time pressure, or multitasking.

At this point, a person becomes capable of performing the task without thinking about its details, because the brain has learned to process it automatically as a result of months, years, or thousands of correct repetitions.
At this stage, thinking does not disappear completely, but rather shifts from focusing on the basic steps to focusing on finer details, solving new problems, or making more complex decisions. This is why experts can handle complex situations very quickly, because the basic processes have become automatic and are performed in the background.
When a skill becomes automatic, the mind is freed to think about more important things.
After a large number of correct repetitions, the skill gradually becomes part of procedural memory, which is responsible for performing repeated activities automatically. This is why a person can perform the skill quickly and accurately while using less mental energy compared with the earlier stages.
At this stage, experts rely heavily on pattern recognition, allowing them to notice relationships, details, and signals that beginners may not notice. This makes their decisions appear fast or intuitive, even though they are based on years of accumulated experience.

Many people think that experts rely only on intuition, but the reality is different. Although automatic performance represents a high level of competence, it does not mean reaching the end. There is a higher level, Mastery, where a person does not simply perform the skill automatically, but continues to learn, develop, innovate, and constantly improve while avoiding the trap of complacency or arrogance.
Many people believe that reaching the stage of Unconscious Competence means the end of the learning journey, but the reality is that there is a higher level called Mastery. At this stage, it is not merely about performing the skill automatically, but about being able to develop it, improve it, innovate within it, and adapt to new situations while continuing to learn regardless of how much experience a person has gained.
Mastery is not simply possessing a skill; it is a way of thinking, a way of life, and a continuous commitment to growth. A person who has achieved mastery does not ask, "Have I become an expert?" but continually asks, "How can I become better than I am today?"
Mastery is not a destination you reach, but a journey that never stops.
Competence means being able to perform a task correctly, while mastery means being able to perform the task at the highest possible level of quality while continuously improving performance, discovering better methods, and dealing with new situations that have never been encountered before.

That is why true experts never stop learning, because they understand that maintaining their level requires effort that is no less than the effort that originally brought them there.
However, reaching mastery is not without risks. Some people stop learning after reaching a high level, while others become arrogant or complacent, causing their performance to decline over time. Complacency occurs when a person feels that their current level is sufficient, so they stop practicing regularly, reduce the review of their mistakes, and stop looking for new skills. Over time, the quality of their performance begins to decline because skills require continuous practice to maintain them.
This decline does not happen suddenly, but gradually, which is why a person may not notice that they have become less competent than they were in the past.
The second danger is overconfidence, where a person believes that their experience makes them consistently right, causing them to reject feedback, underestimate the opinions of others, or ignore the emergence of new technologies and methods. Over time, they become less capable of adapting to change despite possessing extensive experience.
