All of these examples represent data only because they do not tell us whether they are good, bad, normal, or abnormal, nor do they explain their causes.
Data sources vary depending on the field, but they often include direct observation, measurements, surveys, electronic devices, databases, scientific experiments, historical records, reports, interviews, and other methods that allow facts to be collected as they are.
The more accurate the method used to collect data, the more reliable the results that will later be built upon it.
After collecting data, the next stage begins: Information, where data is organized, connected, and given meaning that helps us understand what is actually happening instead of merely observing separate facts.
After collecting data comes the second stage, Information. At this stage, raw data begins to acquire meaning because the mind no longer looks at each fact separately. Instead, it begins to organize, classify, and connect the facts so they can describe reality in an understandable way.
If data represents letters, information represents words and sentences that carry a clear message. For this reason, information is not produced merely by collecting new data, but by rearranging existing data in a way that reveals the relationships between them.
Information is not more data; it is data that has become meaningful.
Information is data that has been organized, interpreted, or placed within a specific context so that it can answer a clear question or describe a particular situation. It adds the meaning that was absent at the data stage.
For example, when a person knows that the temperature is 38 degrees Celsius, this is simply data. But when they know that this temperature is above the normal range and may indicate a fever, the data has become information because it has acquired meaning through comparison and context.

If data does not answer a specific question, information generally answers one main question:
What is happening?
It describes the current reality or explains what happened, but it does not yet explain the deeper causes or provide appropriate solutions, because that belongs to the stage of knowledge.
This transformation does not happen automatically. It requires several mental processes, such as classification, ordering, comparison, measurement, identifying patterns, and discovering relationships between different numbers, events, or observations.
For example, a company may record the number of customers each day for an entire month. These are simply data. But when the data is organized into a table or graph, and you discover that the number of customers decreases every Friday, you now have information because you have identified a pattern that can be observed.

Although information is more useful than data, it is still insufficient for making accurate decisions. It tells us what is happening, but it does not explain why it is happening or how to deal with it. Therefore, a person who possesses a great deal of information but does not know how to interpret it will have difficulty solving problems effectively.
Information describes reality; knowledge explains it.
Once data has acquired meaning, the third stage begins: Knowledge, where the mind starts interpreting information, understanding its causes, and discovering relationships between different pieces of information so that it can use them to solve problems and make decisions.
Knowledge represents the stage at which a person moves from merely describing reality to understanding it. At this stage, the mind does not simply observe what is happening; it begins analyzing causes, identifying patterns, and connecting previous information with acquired experience until it becomes capable of explaining phenomena and using that understanding practically.
For this reason, knowledge is considered the true turning point within the DIKW model because it moves a person from the role of an observer to that of a practitioner capable of using what they have learned to solve problems, improve performance, and develop better decisions.
Knowledge does not mean simply knowing the truth; it means knowing how to use it.
Knowledge is the understanding that results from analyzing information and connecting it with experience, practice, and previous learning. Although knowledge gives a person the ability to interpret reality, it is not always sufficient to make the best decision. A person may know several possible solutions but may not know which one is most appropriate for a particular situation, at a particular time, or with a particular person. This is where the highest stage, wisdom, emerges.
Knowledge tells you how to execute; wisdom tells you when, why, and whether you should execute it at all.
After acquiring knowledge, a person reaches the highest stage of the model: Wisdom. At this stage, it is no longer enough to know how to solve a problem; the person must also choose the most appropriate and effective solution, with the lowest cost, and the greatest alignment with long-term goals.
Wisdom represents the highest level in the DIKW model, because it is the stage at which understanding, experience, and knowledge are transformed into balanced decisions that achieve the best results in both the short and long term. At this stage, a person does not simply ask: How should I do it? but begins to ask the more important questions: Should I do it? Why? And when?
This is why wisdom is more than simply possessing a large amount of information or extensive experience. It is the ability to use knowledge at the right time and in the right way, while taking into account circumstances, people, future consequences, and ethical principles.
Wisdom is not simply knowing the answer, but knowing when to use it, and when not to use it.
Wisdom is the ability to make sound judgments based on knowledge, experience, and deep thinking, while considering the bigger picture rather than focusing on only a small part of it.
